France: Ligue 2 :Auxerre- Brest
We have backed Auxerre a couple of times recently and last Friday I wrote ........
Auxerre scored a third consecutive win (one cup) at home to Nancy last week and after shipping goals so freely in their first three games, they will be delighted to have conceded just once in their last trio of starts.
Ahead of the first of those wins, 3-0 at Orleans my notes included ...........
Auxerre are also pointless and have conceded six, three in each (scoring three total themselves). Auxerre missed five big chances across the two games and do have good offensive options, especially on the flanks where LM Romain Philippoteaux has 28 goals and 17 assists from out wide in just over 100 apperances at this level and Hamza Sakhi. The two league h2h meetings last season produced 9 goals with Auxerre winning 3-2 here earlier this year and also hitting the woodwork THREE times, with the two wide men running riot with a goal and 2 assits between them and Sakhi picking up MOTM plaudits.
Prior to the defeat of Nancy I updated with ........
It is clear that Auxerre pose a big offensive threat, Philippoteaux was very influential out wide, they did not have to call upon Sakhi (see both above) until the hour mark, striker Yanis Merdji scored twice, his first goals of the campaign. They scored three more in midweek in the Coupe de la Ligue (3-1 v Gazelec) when Sakhi played in the middle of a three behind Merdji, the other wide man Mancini scored twice, Mickael Barreto played that second striker role last week, scored and again from off the bench in the cup and their options are many and varied up top and some big decisions for the head coach to make today. Their only clean sheet came versus Orleans but that says more right now about their host and I would not rush to back Auxerre to keep another, even against a transitioning Nancy. Orleans drew 1-1 at home with newly promoted Beziers in the cup on Tuesday progressing on penalties where they again had a player sent off late, second time in four starts and indiscipline along with a very leaky backline and fairly toothless offensive unit, is not a great combination.
Auxerre are up to 9th, have a very good L2 budget (more than 2.5 times that of Red Star)and remain a "name" club, they added Samuel Souprayen from Hellas Verona this week, he has a lot of experience of this league, making 119 L2 starts for Dijon (they finished 7-6-4 in the last three seasons he played) he goes straight into the squad this evening.
They lost that 1-0 away to Red Star, but battered the home goal "winning" shots 17-7, on target 6-2, inside box 11-3, woodwork 1-0, corners 10-3, saves 1-6 , with 61% possession and dominated all passing stats. They have multi offensive options and can rotate up top without weaking them significantly and they look a "good " midtable team who could push on this season, but need to start winning more regularly. In midweek they saw off Chateaurox in the cup 2-1 to get back into our good books, but in truth have done nothing wrong since we started tracking them. They are not as good defensively as with the ball, that is obvious, but do look full of goals and teams are going to have to ride their luck like Red Star did, to keep them out for 90 minutes.
Brest are a good road team under offensive minded head coach Jean-Marc Furlan and are 19-12-9 in away league starts (47.5% win rate) since the start of 2016-17, with those games averaging over 2.5 goals, that average has gone up to 3.0 pg since the start of last season and the midweek 3-3 draw away to Le Havre has done little to dissuade thinking about how they will approach today. Their two visits to Auxerre under Furlan have produced 3 and 4 goals and a repeat is on the cards.
1.75 units "over" 2.5 goals 2.11 asian line/Sportmarket.
