Championship previews: Crystal Palace-Peterborough United and Burnley-Ipswich Town
Championship:
All these matches start at 12.45 UK time. All five previews written at 09.00 today.
First up, many of us have big positions on Watford for promotion and the situation is pretty clear cut, if they pick up one point on Hull City today, they will claim second place. So, if the Hornets draw at home to Leeds United and Hull lose to Cardiff City, that is enough, or a win for Watford and draw or loss for the Tigers. We do, of course, also have the fallback of the playoffs, but it would be a real bonus to clinch this today. Obviously City are favourites at circa 1.40 to seal the deal, but if Watford can get ahead it will force Hull to look for a winner and a relaxed Cardiff might not just roll over. I think the longer the match at the KC Stadium goes without a goal the better for us, that sounds like stating the obvious, but if it goes 20 minutes all square, the visitors competitive instinct might kick in , they are the better team and might "forget" they have nothing to play for. All the pressure is on the Tigers and they have not handled it well over the last week or two.... fingers crossed !
Crystal Palace - Peterborough United
Everyone seems to be expecting an open encounter between two free scoring and conceding teams, but I am not so sure. Palace need a point to secure a top six finish and were very happy to play out a 0-0 bore draw in what is usually a passionate derby game with Millwall in midweek. If the normal competitive nature of that fixture didn't divert them from their gameplan, why should they want to battle it out, at least early, with Posh this afternoon.
United have been very much the better of these two in 2013 and have averaged a point a game more over the last ten matches, they are fighting for survival, as they have been virtually since August , they are outside the drop zone on goal difference and will be safe with a point if either Barnsley do not win, or Sheffield Wednesday lose.
Therefore, a point each might well see both achieve their aim today and I see no reason for either to go gung-ho from the start, infact, I suspect both will be ultra cautious and look to see how things playout elsewhere. Then, if the need to gamble, they can.
I like the half time draw at circa 2.375, neither will be out of the equation at that stage and if they then find out that results elsewhere dictate they have to step up, they still have 45 minutes to do so and the bonus is that at that time their opponent might no longer be as motivated. Forest or Bolton losing will see Palace clinch a post season spot, or Barnsley and/or Wednesday two down, will leave Posh safe. BTW these are two of the top 7 performing first half teams in the Championship and look closely matched anyway, all in all, it makes perfect sense and the odds look generous. 1.25 units Half Time Draw 2.25-2.40.
Burnley-Ipswich Town
Now two matches where there is nothing at stake and traditionally, these produce goals on the final day of the season. There is no pressure and clubs should be looking to send supporters off for the summer with positive mental memories. Town boss Mick ( why the long face ?) McCarthy would not be the first on your list of managers if you were looking for entertainment, but he was very relieved in post match interviews last week to have finally secured survival and even he will unleash the shackles this afternoon I feel. His team do have goals in them and they have put three past both Birmingham City and Crystal Palace in their last two home starts, on the road, they have played a very different style and looked to keep things tight under McCarthy, but that should change today and he will rotate his squad and relax a little. Home boss Sean Dyche will be without central defenders Michael Duff (suspended) and David Edgar (compassionate leave) and another in Kevin Long faces a late test, with left back Ben Mee injured, that is a lot of problems and greatly reduced options at the back.
1.5 units Burnley-Ipswich "over" 2.5 goals 2.08 asian line/Ibramarket.
Good Luck.
