WTA: US Open: Venus Williams - Serena Williams

I see no reason to waste much time on this, we all know the history and background story and it is a little like previewing Barce-Real, but they are on a neutral ground and one is made huge favourite and your brain is just telling you that cannot be right ! Venus has won twice for us this week and I cannot let 3.20 + go unbacked, I just don't have it in me !

On Wednesday .............

I was quite impressed with Venus' win over Svetlana Kuznetsova who is not the type of player you usually want to allow back into a match in R1 ..........

H2h is tied at 5-5, 3-3 on hard courts with those six meetings all being decided in two sets which is odd, infact, only one of their 10 matches (on clay) has gone the distance.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is a long time clubgowi favourite but has missed much of the last 12 months with injury and her ranking had fallen to #128 before winning in Washington a couple of weeks back, she didn't beat much, but four players ranked between 44 and 91 and it would have been a huge confidence boost. She had posted just 2 wins in six tournaments in build up to that, with all losses coming in two sets. She could not follow up that run in Cincinnati, but did take Elina Svitolina to three sets.

Venus is also having a tough time by her own sky high standards. She had a great 2017 , but a very disappointing Australian Open and Wimbledon, she did OK in Miami and Indian Wells in the early US hardcourt swing and showed her first form since with a couple of wins in Montreal, before losing to Simona Halep 2&2. Her record here in NY is 76-16 with two wins, 9 semi final and 11 last 8 appearances and is 19-0 in R1, losing just four times before R4. Venus is also 33-2 in NY v players ranked 51+ with one of those losses to eventual champion Sloane Stephens.

Kuznetsova also has a famous (at least in my household) win here from 2007, but has three US Open first round defeats and has not made it beyond R2 since 2013.

I would not be surprised to see another "no show" from one or the other and backing either to win in two is probably not wrong, I have to lean towards Williams the elder, she has made R4 in 7/10 slams including four semis and two finals and is the better big event player nowadays.

I have said some uncomplimentary things about Giorgi in the past, most involving her father and his/her antics off court and that, IMO, held back her career, she is currently #45 and has top 30 ability when she chooses to show it, witness taking Serena to three sets in the Wimbledon quarter final, but blows hot and cold and in the last three year she is 3-15 v top 20 opponents on hard courts and really is in the group ( see above) that Venus has always thrived against on this surface and especially here in NY, Giorgi has a losing record in the US Open and has only made it past R2 once in six attempts and Wimbledon aside, has made it to R3 only 3 times in 18 slams. This is really only about Venus, if she feels OK that is good enough for me.

Serena leads the h2h 12-16, but Venus is 1-0 post baby, having beaten Serena 4&3 in Indian Wells, I don't doubt that Willians the mum is a little fitter now, but still quite some way off 100%, ahead of that meeting I wrote ..............

Bit surprised they chose Serena -Venus for the late game ! Only joking, shame that they have to meet at this early stage though. Last time they faced off was in the 2017 Australian Open , their 9th slam final meeting. Serena had a baby subsequently, she was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time of their meeting in Melbourne and this is her comeback tournament, she has won two matches here Diyas (7-5 6-3) and Bertens (7-6 7-5), both were, as the scoreline suggests close, but Serena's second serve was on the money and the key shot across the two contests, but she was mistiming the ball when trying to hit it harder, especially against Bertens , that is to be expected but I think it is important today.

Venus tried to make hay while her sister was out of the picture and made two slam finals and one semi in 2017, but couldn't quite get over the line  and maybe, just maybe, she put too much pressure on herself to win whilst Serena was away and I have some other thoughts about all that, but will save them in case Venus gets another chance this year. She will turn 38 in June, Serena 37 three months later, but as I am so fond of saying, normal rules just do not apply to the pair and I am not sure that is even much of an issue currently. Venus went to Australia and lost in the first round at both Brisbane and the AO which was a shock, neither were easy matches on paper, but I expected more , she beat Sorana Cirstea in her first match here so is off the mark and seemed reasonably pleased with her form in that. Venus returned to top ten last year and even though she has not played much in 2018, Serena was out of the game for 14 months, tried to come back earlier and was not ready and needs a few matches and time on court to get back to her best and just time her shots better. I think she was lucky (with the opposition) in those two match ups and expect Venus to ask her more questions and am not sure we have the right favourite today
