PGA Tour:Travelers Championship: Bubba Watson (starts Thursday)
I had no intention of getting involved pre tournament, but odds are too big and we have to take a little something "just in case" Bubba has one of those weeks.
Bubba is one of my/our guys and quite possible the best 'in contention' golfer on the planet and we have milked his ability to get the job done over the weekend so many times in the past, including twice this year winning for us at odds of 13.0 and 3.75 ( see below in February and March) and you will see in those notes, he does all his winning in the first six months or the year and we just squeeze into that this week . It is almost always best to wait and see how he is going through 2-3 rounds before getting involved, but odds look too juicy to take that chance this time and we are only betting small, we have the option to "push" over the weekend should we choose and this will ensure that if we do, we get greatly inflated combined odds. It is one of those occasions where I would sooner bet low and lose, than risk missing out.
Watson missed the cut at theUS Open, we need not bother ourselves over that, it is not his style of golf at all really and in ten Open's he has not played the weekend six times and posted only one Top 30 finish and it just doesn't play to his strengths. Additional bonus is that he missed out on a tough two days at Shinnecock and has more time to prepare for a course he likes. He is a multi winner at several courses, two US Masters at Augusta, three (what is now named) Genesis Open's and this event twice, taking the title in 2010 and 2015, the former was his first on Tour and that always holds a special place in any golfer's heart. In addition he was 6th here in 2008 ( 66-68-67-66) , 14th the next year with a Sunday 63, T2 in 2012 with 65-65 over the weekend and 4th the following year, a fantastic course CV. Both wins here came in playoffs and he has a tremendous record of 5-1 in additional holes, always worth bearing in mind when things are close down the stretch. I think he can win for the third time this year and in this event. He played the Memorial prior to the Open and on Sunday, Bubba played some lovely golf he hit 12 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation and had a great day on the green missing nothing within 10 feet, so no worries about his current form for me.
0.5 units each way (one unit staked) Bubba Watson 29.0-34.0 general quote..........various place odds 1/4 5 places up to 1/5 for 8 spots, best to go with highest odds and take whatever is offered for the place on this occasion.
Good Luck.
Plenty of class on the leaderboard, with Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama all within three strokes of one shot leader Bubba Watson.
It is five years since Watson entered the final round inside the top 5 and did not equal or better his starting position............think about that for a second. 16 times in the last four years he has gone into Sunday (or R4) inside the top five and on all 16 occasions , that's 100% if it sounds more impressive, he has at least equalled that 54 hole position, that is a stunning record and he could easily lay claim to being the best "closer" of any sporting event, let alone golf. No golfer teeing off today is likely to be as confident of his own ability to get the job done as BW and that includes Rory.
