Big derby game, but St Etienne have a national cup semi final at home to Rennes on Wednesday, who will be better rested, that is win-able for the host, but I am not sure they can fully commit to and win both games and as big a rivalry as this is, they do not get a chance to win silverware very often. Also, Dijon, Nimes, Amiens and Toulouse who are all below St Etienne have already lost this weekend, so their need to win is lessened. Not saying they would ever take it easy against OL , but their need is suddenly not as great and they play a similarly big game in a couple of days.Lyon are used to doing battle on multiple fronts, still have their eyes on third and will be buoyed by that midweek win over Juventus. Lyon are free scoring, only PSG scored more last season, or this and they will go fifth with the win and play the two teams immediately above them later this month, so the race for third will be well and truly on with three points this evening.XP puts Lyon third, as does ITB and gives them a +48 differential over St Etienne. Looks like the visitors will have a midfielder in CD and goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier has not made the three for today after falling out with head coach Claude Puel.
PSG by winning over Bordeaux with both teams scoring 10 days ago.............
Bordeaux are unbeaten in five and have a better record here in the capital in recent years than many, avoiding defeat in 4 of ten Ligue 1 visits (it is all relative !) and scored twice in two of the last four.
PSG shipped four goals at Amiens last week, looked sluggish at Dortmund in midweek and have now conceded 10 goals in five starts without a clean sheet and to be honest, it should have been more !
They are under no pressure in the league, Marseille's home loss yesterday ensures they will retain a double digit lead at the top of the table regardless, but they visit Strasbourg and Lyon immediately before the return with Dortmund, the Champions League is their real target and they need to find their A game before that and it will be easier to start that today, than in those two tough road fixtures.
Bordeaux will not expect much from this, but equally have little to lose and three points, would take them up six places and to within five points of a Champions League spot, so the reward is big. They have a fully fit squad to choose from and can afford to give this their best.
PSG won that 4-3, they followed up on Saturday with a 4-0 demolition of Dijon, that gives them an extra 24 hours over OL to prepare for this. the Parisians have now scored 34 goals in their last 9 domestic starts, 4 or more in each of the last five, including a 4-2 win over Lyon in the capital and two road games, they also won 1-0 here in Lyon in early season. The title is secure for PSG and they can play in second gear in Ligue 1 games between now and the end of the season, their priority is next week's return leg with Dortmund, but the league position means they can think about that after tonight and give priority this week to this game, they will also want to keep momentum up ahead of hosting Dortmund.
Lyon are probably the second best team in France, but they are 5th currently and need to be playing Champions League football, they are still in the competition this year, but need to break into the top 3 in the league and that has to be their domestic priority. They are currently 7 points adrift of Rennes in 3rd and six off 4th place Lille, on Sunday they travel to the latter and that has to be their #1 target this week, yes, it is always nice to beat PSG, but give all tonight in pursuit of that and leave nothing for Sunday is not really an option and you do not beat PSG without fully committing to the task.
I have done well with backing OL in this fixture in the past and it is one PSG traditionally struggle with, but it feels like the edges are with the visitor this time, both teams will rotate, visiting head coach Thomas Tuchel said:“Ander Herrera, Thiago Silva and Choupo-Moting will not be traveling, Presnel Kimpembe is suspended and Colin Dagba is not yet ready to play. We have to wait for a final test for Angel Di Maria, otherwise everyone will be available. ”
Lyon have named a 23 man squad for this evening, that many normally means quite a bit of rotation and trying to keep the opposition guessing, I expect them to be rest some for the weekend, they have already lost Memphis Depay and Jeff Reine-Adelaide ( 11 goals and 5 assists between them) for the season, have only scored 14 in their last 9 (20 less than PSG) and can ill afford any more injuries, with huge games at Lille, Rennes and Turin all in the next 17 days.
