Ligue 2............
May 26, 2023
Penultimate round in Ligue 2. The goals never particularly flow in the second tier of French football, but are currently running at the highest level since 2017-18 and we "always" see an upturn at the end of the season and have used that to our advantage in the past. Last weekend saw all 10 games produce 2+ goals at an average of 3.7 and we have several "friendlies" today and largely feature teams who have played freely this season and/or were involved in high scoring games last week and now, a week nearer that summer vacation, it is hard to make a case for any going into a defensive shell.
Quevilly- Rouen- Amiens
Quevilly are a small club with a tiny budget and can feel very proud that they have not only secured a third season in Ligue 2, but have done so with a degree of comfort. They were playing 4th tier football just seven years ago and have had three promotions and one relegation subsequently, so to now finish mid table is admirable. Their budget this season was the 5th smallest, but it was actually up 41.7% from last season (survived via the playoffs) and has clearly been well spent. Like most this is a league where money talks and the teams with the four smallest budgets are all currently bottom 6. They are now in position to throw the shackles off and their last six games have seen four produce 4+ goals and the two that didn't were versus the top 2 , Le Havre and Bordeaux, who had other ambitions and ideas about how they wanted those fixtures to play out. Amiens have conceded six goals in their last two outings and have given up the 4th most road goals this season, with the worst goal difference outside the drop zone. XGF suggests they are the biggest L2 underachievers and that they should have scored an additional 8 goals and I suspect they will get chances to close that gap today!
