Short corners ..............why ?
Apr 07, 2022
Because you are retaining possession in a dangerous area, but one where the defence is set up rigidly to defend the first phase, once you get into the second or third, defensive players are caught between set play and open play organisation, with no guarantee that they will all do so at the same time , you are forcing defenders into split second decisions and that is when errors occur . Roughly 40% of corners crossed directly into the box fail to clear the first defender and the chances of scoring directly from a corner are circa 1.25% , but rise to almost 4.75% including the second, third or more phases. That's why !
Of course, if you have a dead ball specialist who can deliver the ball into the box on a sixpence that is a very different matter and it can still result (that might even be the intention) in a second or third phase attempt. Witness these two from Christian Eriksen on his full debut for Brentford at Norwich City, that still allows from some invention from corners and is the best of both worlds, but not every team has an Eriksen !
BTW when was the last time you saw the ball actually placed inside the arc like in the photograph ?
Good luck !
