2021 Ryder Cup ............
Sep 24, 2021
Ryder Cup: USA -Europe: Whistling Straits, Wisconsin
The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The competition format is as follows:
- Day 1 (Friday) – 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches and 4 fourball (better ball) matches
- Day 2 (Saturday) – 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches
- Day 3 (Sunday) – 12 singles matches
On the first two days there are 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches with the home captain choosing which are played in the morning and which in the afternoon.
With a total of 28 points available, 14½ points are required to win the Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the Cup. All matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes.
Not much of a preview from me, this is not an event in which the US have travelled well in, losing the plot at times in Europe, but they have been at their best on home soil and have won two of the last three as host and both easily and it should have been all three. With Europe coming from 10-6 behind going into the singles to win 14.5-13.5 in a victory which seemed so unlikely it was dubbed the Miracle of Medinah by the media who, almost to a man, named it amongst the greatest comebacks in sporting history.
I cannot see beyond a home win, the 12 US players are all ranked inside the top 21 in the world and 10 inside the top 13. Europe's dozen contain just four ranked inside the top 20 , only world #1 Jon Rahm in the top 13 and half of them ranked between 35-63.
I accept this is a format that many golfers do not play, but at the end of the day, of the top 11 ranked players in this event, 10 are American.
It also has to be said that several of the visitors are in terrible form. Also, Europe are always well supported in this event, but with travel restricted, that will not be the case this time and having been humiliated in Paris in 2018 and having had to wait an extra year for revenge , I see a hugely motivated host , with a much better team and with all the advantages, looking to rub some European noses in the Wisconsin grass.
18.5-9.5 is the biggest win since this current format was introduced and a repeat is not out of the question, the last two US wins were by 17-11 and 16.5 -11.5 and I think the final winning score is likely to fall somewhere between the record win and those two.
The US to win
18.5-9.5 .............. is priced at circa 26.0-29.0...... 31.4+ Pinnacle
18-10 ..................19.0-21.0... ...23.1 Pinnacle
17.5-10.5............ 17.0-19.0.......19.1 Pinnacle
17-11................ 13.0 15.0
16.5 -11.5.............. 15.0
Backing all five pays around a combined 3.50-3.60 and I think that is very decent value and a good way to bet the US ,who are priced at a prohibitive 1.52 with Pinnacle to win the Ryder Cup.
2 units USA to win between 16.5-11.5 and 18.5-9.5 at circa 3.50-3.60.............pretty sure that most of you can work this out, or explain it better than me, but the simplest way is to just divide the payout (circa 7.2 units) by the odds you can play, so if that is 31.0 Pinnacle for the 18.5-9.5 winning score it would be 7.2÷31= 0.232 units and the same for each score. This is sometimes called "dutching".
While we are on the subject, to work out combined odds...........
Example: If you want to back three outcomes and they are priced at circa 6.5/ 7.5./9.0 just add up the percentages of each......
6.5/100 = 15.38%
7.5/100 = 13.33%
9.0/100 = 11.11%
which totals 39.82%, divide that by 100 and you have your combined odds...... 2.51.
I will be asking questions and testing you on this later in the week !
Good luck
