Poland -Senegal

I have no strong opinion to be honest. Poland are ranked #8 by FIFA and have been top 5 in the last year and qualified with ease, scoring freely , but also conceding, it was an easy group, that is not their fault, but the 4-0 loss to Denmark in Copenhagen is a concern. They made the last 8 at Euro 2016 but two wins were 1-0, the other three games were draws, with two going into extra time, those were in stark contrast to either of their last two qualifying campaigns and their three games v African teams at the WC have only produced one goal total in 270 minutes and I suspect we might see a return to low scoring (non) action. They have also not scored a goal in their last five competition openers and failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight WC starts , losing six. They were free scoring in Euro qualification as well , but reverted to tournament type in the finals and I expect another low scoring encounter.

Senegal have flattered many times in the past and I was very keen on them with that golden generation of 2002 who reached the quarter finals (should have made the semis) in Japan/South Korea, that was their first ever WC and they have not been back since, so huge incentive to do well. They have talent with Sadio Mane, Mame Diouf, Idrissa Gueye, Kalidou Koulibaly etc and 22 of 23 play in Europe, 17 in Big 5 leagues and if they click here , could go far. They are tough to score against and have allowed just 4 in eight starts, but the one real worry is the lack of games v top 20 and non African opposition, just two who meet both criteria in the last four years, a 2-0 loss to Mexico and 2-1 defeat in Croatia 11 days ago, but they led until late there and both were, of course, friendlies and in the latter they would not want to have given too much away. We know Poland are decent , tough to beat and the same is almost certainly true of Senegal. Both would like to win, but will fancy their chances v Japan and avoiding defeat today will surely be the priority, under goals is not my thing and even the 2 goal line is quoted at odds of sub 2.0 which is not my idea of fun either, but I do think we have a good chance of our 4th group stage draw and feel that is the best value on offer in this match up.
