France: Ligue 2:Chateauroux-Le Havre
Finally, Le Havre have shown all of that offensive potential we spoke about early season ....
Le Havre lost hugely promising young full back Benjamin Mendy to Marseille, but got a nice fat fee and added centre back Florian Pinteaux from Monaco (29-0-1 with Sedan last season), right winger Mickaël Le Bihan (36-7-2) from Sedan.... to score seven goals from out wide in a relegated team and he was playing right back on occasion, was impressive , defensive midfielder Romain Saïss (31-0-3) from Clermont and made the on loan signing of Zargo Touré (36-0-0) permanent. They also took several promising youngsters on loan and they have incredible options through the team, with a number of players able to play in more than one position.
Upfront, Yohann Riviere (34-13-6), Geoffrey Malfleury (31-7-1), Riyad Mahrez (34-4-6) and Walid Mesloub (37-8-4) give them a lot of goal threat and with Le Bihan on the right and unknown futsal player Moussa Sao being given a two year contract and the number 9 shirt (!) after a trial, there is also huge competition for places and HAC look the real deal. First round is always a bit of an unknown, but I do not think we will get level ball and odds against too often for HAC this season and I have to take it. Sao has made the squad btw and I am very interested to see him and the potentially exciting visitors.
They started the season very sluggishly, but we saw glimpses of the real HAC in the cup and last week ran in six goals (!) against league leaders Racing Club Lens, who were previously unbeaten in five and had only conceded twice. Riviere, Mesloub (twice), Mahrez and Sao ( see all above) all scored and had a further four assists between them. To get a couple of your offensive options firing at the same time is great, four is amazing, strikers tend to score goals in "batches" and it is very difficult not to see at least a couple of these going on a run now. Left winger Alexandre Bonnet also had a goal and an assist and he, to continue the theme, was very streaky last year, when he had 5 goals and seven assists, with 5 and 5 coming over separate five and six game periods( hope that makes sense !). They are without Riviere tonight, but with so many options upfront, coach Erick Mombaerts might be a little relieved he has one less decision to make, he does get forward James Fanchone back for the first time this season, he has 50 + goals at this level and it is worth noting that in limited playing time last season, he did manage a goal and assist in a 3-0 home defeat of Chateauroux.
We discussed the hosts on Matchday 3...
Chateauroux ended last year poorly, collecting just ten points from their last ten matches and they have carried that forward with one point from their two opening games, that came in a 3-3 home draw with Brest. Defensively they "worry" me, they have not kept a cleansheet in six ( four times conceding two or more) and look short of alternatives in the backline. This evening they have named three central defenders and two young full backs and that is pretty much the extent of their options. I assume they will be looking to get someone in as cover, but if not, team news is going to be very interesting for them this season, one or two injuries and they will be in big trouble.
They are 1-1-5 in all competitive starts this season and have played poorly right through 2013. Tonight they are without suspended duo of midfielder Ludovic Guerriero ( 35 starts last season and no wins in seven without him) and right back Loïc Nestor (29 apps in 2012-13), injured are left winger Clément Tainmont (34-6-7 last season), midfield regular David de Freitas and striker Kévin Dupuis, who has scored two of only five goals they have managed this season. All would probably have started this evening and are big losses, Le Havre have a terrible record here, but are never going to get a better opportunity and they should win this. Good Luck.
