23/24 League 2: Grimsby Town ( written June 25th)

I am taken with the way that the Mariners are being run, led by two lifetime supporters with long term plans and not looking for a quick fix.

Town took my eye when promoted back to the Football League at the first time of asking in 21/22 , which was the first full season that returning manager Paul Hurst had in his second spell in the job, he had also played for Town and knows the club, area and supporters well. They finished 6th in the National League that season, but had played at top 2 level over the final 20 games and won all three playoff games after extra time, showing great battling qualities and a total refusal to be beaten or give up, to be honest, it was very hard not to be impressed. That was also the first full season with Jason Stockwood as chairman and joint majority shareholder, he is very much the figurehead, but his partner and fellow top shareholder is Andrew Pettit , the pair are both lifelong fans and technology entrepreneurs with impressive and successful CV's . They appointed Debbie Cook as CEO , she is a big personality, very likeable, totally committed to the club and town and the trio are embedded in the local community.

In their first season in League 2, they sold 2,000 team shirts in the first week they went on sale, this alone is impressive as many other small clubs could not even get them delivered from suppliers, whereas Town had them at the club 3-4 months beforehand. They also sold 5,700 season tickets (ground only holds 9,000). Town finished 11th which was decent, but they did draw 10 home games , XP gave them 12 more points and placed them 8th and suggested that 9 of those additional points should have come at Blundell Park and there is clear potential to make an almost quantum leap forward in terms of home points gained.

Whether it is 11th or 8th ,both are ideally positions to launch a push this season. Over the last ten seasons the 30 automatic promotion spots have been filled by 9 clubs relegated the previous season, one promoted team, eight who made the playoffs, two who finished 16th-21st and ten who were placed between 8th and 13th. With Town, both in reality and "expected" coming into that most prolific group.

The club got a lot of headlines last season with a super impressive run in the FA Cup, becoming only the 6th team from L2 or below to reach the last 8 since the 1958/59 season. They beat five teams from leagues above them , including trounching L1 champions Plymouth Argyle 5-1, drawing away to Luton Town 2-2 , beating them 3-0 in the return and the Hatters will be playing in the EPL this season, they also won 2-1 away to another top flight team (at the time) in Southampton. Not only did this raise the profile of club and town, but was a real money spinner earning them circa £600k which is more than half of what L2 clubs receive as their share of broadcasting income, also verification that they were on the right track and could compete against bigger clubs and we are talking about across six games, not an isolated single fixture.

Town feel they are only just getting started and they have big ambitions for the stadium and facilities , but want to get everything right in terms of income (off pitch revenue has doubled twice since the new owners arrived) and on the playing side first. They have already made six signings this season, 2-3 more are said to be in the pipeline, but they want to get all this business done ASAP and before the team head to Spain for a training camp and even that is not usual for a club at this level. All the targets that Paul Hurst wanted have been signed , areas of weakness addressed and a very young squad has been added to, with a lot of experience and players who have a history not just in L2, but in League 1. Including two that Hurst said he had been chasing down for a year.
