46 games to be played in the EFL so we are just shy of a third of the way through the campaign and teams are starting to sort themselves out.

Across the last eight seasons, only one eventual champion has led after 15 rounds, but all were top 7 at this stage and seven were top 5.

Current leaders Forest Green Rovers would not be promoted out of turn, but they have flattered to deceive previously since eventually making it into the Football League and it took several deep runs for them to get out of the National. Also they seem incredibly short priced to me and last season, they were pretty much top 2 for xP all campaign and finished 6th and look to have regressed from those numbers this time round and supporters are not particularly confident about their chances, which is odd, given where they stand currently. Exeter City are another team who are always around the playoff fringes, finishing 5-4-9-5-9 in the last five seasons , but tend to fade when the going gets tough, they also draw too many games for my liking and I could say the same about Leyton Orient, about whom I have some other issues, like they were ranked #24 for xP last season and it is a big ask to go straight from zero to hero. That leaves Port Vale, Northampton Town and Swindon Town from the group most likely to produce the champion and I would not rule any of the trio out, but it is the latter I wish to discuss today and who are both the most interesting and biggest priced.

Swindon were relegated from League 1 last season , losing a massive 29 games and had some huge issues on and off the pitch with a very unpopular owner and the club in total disarray, you can read the sorry details in this article on the Guardian website. This last pre season was delayed and, a couple of weeks before the start of the campaign , there were just nine contracted senior players and virtually no staff, with a high court battle ongoing over ownership of the club between Lee Power (in charge since 2015) and Clem Morfuni who had the backing of the supporters trust and previously held a 15% share. Morfuni eventually took over, but it originally seemed too late for this season, but in a typical Australian way, the new owner rolled his sleeves up and got working. He appointed an equally hungry head coach in Ben Garner, who is well respected within the game and who held major coaching roles at two Premier League teams, but who's first job as "boss" did not end well at Bristol Rovers. Along with a Director of Football in Ben Chorley and after the two appointments Morfuni said:

I have known Ben Chorley for 5 years. Ben had a long successful career as a player and is incredibly knowledgeable about football and has a great knowledge on players. When I came to the club, it didn’t have a head of recruitment or chief scout which I thought was completely wrong. The most important part of building a successful team is recruiting the right players. Ben was actively involved in the recruitment for a couple of years at the club and helped the club make some excellent signings over that period. I have full faith that, given time and support, he will be able to build and put in place the correct infrastructure at the club and make the correct acquisitions to implement my vision. I’m a football fan at heart who supports Swindon Town and I have very clear vision on what the principles under-pinning the Club are to be, and I have complete faith in Ben that he can and will fully implement this.

I gave Ben Chorley a very clear remit of what I wanted from the Head Coach. I wanted a forward thinking coach, a coach that loves being on the grass working with players and wants to improve players every day, a coach that knows how Premier League clubs operate and what players have to do to get to that level, a coach that wants to develop young players and isn’t afraid to play young players, a coach that is a winner and, importantly one who is also available to start work now. With that remit, Ben Chorley recommended Ben Garner and I am fully convinced that he ticks every box on that list and is the right coach to take this club forward.

Ben Garner is a pro license coach, he has over 20 years coaching experience at every level of the game, he’s worked at Premier League clubs and is an extremely respected coach within the game. He has also assembled an extremely strong back room team. His assistant coaches will be Scott Marshall and Scott Lindsey who both have fantastic pedigree, and both have reputations as being outstanding coaches
.

The Australian owner also appointed some experienced financial people to oversee the club and got Swindon on a sound footing in double quick time and he also made himself known around the town and club, interacting with supporters, pulling pints, selling tickets, driving a bus around Swindon to try and up season ticket sales and it has paid dividends ,with the Robins having the second best average home crowd this season and just short of 8,900 is VERY healthy at tier 4 level. They are used to being a big League 2 player and have actually won the title in two of their last four campaigns at this level, the most recent in 2020, in each of those two title winning seasons they were 7th after 15 rounds, so are "ahead of schedule" in that regard.

14 players arrived in a five week period leading up to transfer deadline day and ten played in the last game. Obviously, this squad has gelled as quickly as anyone could have hoped, the mood at the County Ground is like night and day compared to four months ago and Morfuni is prepared to invest in conditioning coaches , which Power wasn't and fitness levels are said to be very high and they have suffered few injuries. They need to improve that home form, collecting 77% of points on the road, but that should happen, they get big support ,the County Ground is quite an intimidating stadium, they have been bossing starts here (65% possession...... I know !) and we should expect a new group to improve from this point on. Young striker Tyreece Simpson has a LOT to learn at just 19 yo, but is pretty composed in front of goal, already has six goals to his name and I cannot work out if he is left or right footed, which is always a good sign and he and Harry McKirdy who was well thought of at the very good Aston Villa academy a couple of years back, are developing a real understanding up top. He worked under Steven Pressley the season before last and the (now) Brentford Head of Individual Development (only Brentford !) said: "He's a devastating young player when he's at it, when you look at McKirdy you always think something is going to happen". Like many at this club, he is also keen to prove himself after recent disappointments and, on and off the pitch Town feel both hungry and on the rise.
