Ligue 2: Caen- Quevilly-Rouen
Caen looked like the best team in Ligue 2 until September and they will not be too disappointed to wave goodbye to the month which saw them lose twice. The international break was a chance to get back to basics and they have been solid enough at home in any case, being unbeaten in 11 (8 wins) , they have actually won 10/14 at home and 7 victories came by at least a two goal margin. The sole game they failed to win here in Caen this season was a 1-1 draw and they were just misfiring that day, creating enough to have won comfortably, prior to that I had written the following and the notes also touched upon Paris FC (see previous preview) ..............
Caen travelled to Paris FC who have been a top Ligue 2 team for several years...........
Paris FC have been a big Ligue 1 player in recent campaigns, they have finished top 5 in three of the last four seasons and you can make a case that they should have been promoted in each, but there are only so many chances that you can give teams and they will be tested to their limits today. Last weekend I explained why I could not bet Guingamp, a team I had been championing through early season............
I cannot stick with Guingamp today, I would have liked to, but they travel to Caen and I wanted to bet them too, as their stats are through the roof and, against good opposition, doubtless both will feature in the coming weeks and a very interesting game with that in mind.
Caen won 4-1 ,they have now played four good teams, taken 10 points, it should have been 12 and were a combined 14-3 for BC's , posting some sensational numbers and it does make you wonder what will happen when they play one of the poorer L2 teams. Guingamp started well in that game and we know they are strong and there was little to put us off them going forward, but Caen were relentless offensively and any team is probably going to have to ride their luck to stop them scoring two+ goals.
Caen led for 43 minutes before conceding a late equaliser, they created three BC's , were denied by the woodwork and nothing in that to swerve us from thinking that they are top 2 level and at the summit of Ligue 2 on merit.
Quevilly did well to survive last season in their first Ligue 2 campaign, but need to do so via the relegation playoff, this time round they are already a place worse off and only off the very foot of the table on goal difference. They have the 5th smallest budget in Ligue 2, but only enough above the actual lowest (Pau) to pay the coffee bill and as usual, money talks and the teams with bottom five budgets are currently placed 15th/16th/17th/19th and 20th! Quevilly have conceded 11 goals in their last four starts , it might easily have been more and they have had discipline issues too (four dismissals) . They lost 2-0 here last season (actually only in May this year) and Caen were also denied by the woodwork twice in that, the hosts should win this with a degree of comfort.
