Leverkusen hung on to their unbeaten record by the skin of their teeth last night in Baku, drawing 2-2 with Qarabag after being 2-0 down through 71 minutes and equalising in added time.
Ahead of their last home game, a 2-1 win over 17th placed Mainz my notes included.......
We were quick to jump on the Leverkusen/ Xabi Alonso gravy train and have been riding it for more than 12 months and it has been an amazing journey. They are unbeaten in 32 competitive starts this season, winning a hard to credit 28 games, scoring 3+ goals in 20 of those. They are top of the Bundesliga by 8 points with their only challenger in disarray, in the last four of the DFB Pokal with the only other top flight team involved 15th placed BMG and are in the last 16 of the Europa League ( March 7 and 14). They were conceding regularly in early season, but that didn't matter as they were blowing teams out of the water , but they improved defensively around the turn of the year when they missed a few players due to international call ups, but they have conceded in two of their last three wins and it would only be human nature for them to at least ease their foot off the accelerator at times, or at least to do so at one end of the pitch.
I think that is what we are seeing now and it will be hard to get 100% up for every fixture and/or blow teams out of the water game after game. It will be easier at home and they are a level or two above most other Bundesliga teams and they got a major wake up call last night, so we can expect them to win, but also to concede and Wolfsburg have scored an eye catching 23 goals in 10 visits to the BayArena. They are coming off a 3-2 home defeat to Stuutgart last weekend ahead of which I noted .......
Wolfsburg are fortunate they picked up a few early season wins as they are winless in eight (six draws) and have won just twice in 17 league starts since their 3-1 defeat in the reverse fixture back in early October. That is 13 points for exactly half a season's worth of games and bottom of the table level. They are no pushovers though and both Bayern and Leverkusen "only " won by the same 2-1 scoreline here at the Volkswagenarena and the hosts have scored in 13/14 games as host. We have been championing Stuttgart for 12 months and whilst they don't "need" to win to stay third, they know that one or both of Dortmund and Leipzig will be finishing the season strongly and they still have to travel to Dortmund and play the top 2, so better to take the points while they are available. They will want a reaction after the 1-1 home draw with Koln last week, but they won xG by 1.6 goals and should bounce back, but are without a clean sheet in eight themselves.
The visitors have scored in 9 of 12 away starts and all those trends can continue today.
2.5 units Bayer Leverkusen to win and both teams to score 3.04 asian line.
