UEFA World Cup Playoffs: Italy- North Macedonia (Palermo)

What a cock-up Italy and Portugal made of qualifying after both looked in control of their section and now one of them is going to miss out on the World Cup, with the pair set to meet in the decider on Tuesday should each progress today (Portugal host Turkey) . Italy will be on the road regardless of whom they face and need to re-find some form, with the record breaking and Euros winning team of 2021 fast becoming a fading memory . They have won just 3 of 11 starts inside 90 minutes and conceded in eight of those and going down the old Italian route of 1-0 being plenty in similar situations, feels like it isn't going to work with this , it has to be said, more adventurous Italian national team and especially against North Macedonia who fear no one and like to play spoiler. I have to admit to having a soft spot for the visitors , a BIG soft spot actually as we are a perfect 6/6 in betting them , all winners at odds of between 2.09- 4.11 and most at 2.60 +, last of those and notes from several, can be found at the foot of this email. They beat Iceland 3-1 to reach this stage. They have nothing to lose, certainly owe us nothing and I would love to see them make a fight of this and definitely don't feel this is a lost cause, beating Italy and then Portugal on the road back to back to qualify is almost as big a ask as there is in European international football, but they will not lack in effort and good odds for ................

1.75 units both teams to score 2.76 asian line.

Good luck !

UEFA World Cup qualifiers: North Macedonia- Iceland (written November 14th)

What a Thursday it turned into for North Macedonia, first up, they beat Armenia 5-0 away from home ahead of which I had written ...............

North Macedonia served us very well at Euro 2020 and we were 4/4 with bets on them at odds of between 2.09 and 4.11 and whilst I rarely bet on these European qualifiers, I have had one eye on them and this does feel like the day to get involved. Ahead of their opener at the Euros I noted......

Austria always seem to disappoint, they have only qualified for three major championships in the last three decades and have not won a group stage game at any of them. Hopes were fairly high when they first qualified for the Euros, but they did finish six group points behind a fairly ordinary Poland team and are struggling for goals right now and in World Cup qualifying. However, they know North Macedonia well having been in the same qualification group and took six points off them , winning 4-1 away and 2-1 at home. Those games were wide open affairs, with Austria creating chance after chance, they had a total xGF of 9 goals , with the games producing 52 attempts, 20 on target, 16 BC's, 39 ITB and 14 saves, these are massive numbers between two teams who have qualified for a major event. North Macedonia looked incredibly naive at times in those two games and Austria might have scored 10 goals, probably should have. However, it is true that NM are also better offensively and they have qualified for the euros via their Nations League campaign and they have scored 14 goals in their last five starts, which, incredibly , included a 2-1 over Germany in Duisburg in WC qualifying. That result sent shock waves around the football world and will ensure that no one treats the debutants lightly, but Austria will surely be as up for this and will be confident with the two h2h games still fresh in the memory and it is hard to over emphasize how dominant they were in those fixtures.

North Macedonia went for that, as they did all three games and made a lot of friends amongst neutrals for their gung ho style and their games with Austria and Ukraine were close, before they (kindly) ran out of steam against the Netherlands. In World Cup qualifying, only Germany have scored more goals in Group J and North Macedonia have been involved in some road "shoot outs" , where their four games have averaged 4.0 goals and they have scored 10 themselves, including two against Germany and Romania, the top 2. They were also a combined 15-5 for BC's in those games, which included that 2-1 win in Duisburg and "beating" Romania 6-2 on premium chances, but finding a way to lose 3-2. They are tied on 12 points with Armenia, just a point back of Romania, who still have to play group minnows Liechtenstein (Sunday), so there has to be a winner in our game. This game kicks off early in Yerevan so a chance for one of them to crank up the pressure on the Romanians who host Iceland later this evening .

The two met here 12 months ago in the Nations league, Armenia won 1-0, but North Macedonia bossed the game and I am expecting a different outcome this time. The home side will be without four players due to suspension, with Sargis AdamyanEduard SpertsyanTaron Voskanyan and Varazdat Haroyan all sidelined and at least three would most likely have started, including their two first choice central defenders.

The win was as comfortable as it sounds and the day just got better, as later they could watch Iceland draw 0-0 away to Romania , a result which put North Macedonia in charge of their own fate, win today and they will finish second to Germany in Group J, earning themselves a place in the playoffs, where a further three World Cup places are up for grabs. It is a huge incentive and to achieve it, "all" they need to do is beat Iceland, or at least equal Romania's result, but they are hosting Liechtenstein, so surely that means the same thing !

Iceland has , I assume, travelled directly from Bucharest to Skopje and will face a far more hostile environment here, as the Romania game was played behind closed doors. Iceland have fallen on hard times. look likely to finish 5th in this group and are currently at their highest FIFA ranking since 2012, up to 62 after briefly breaking into the top 20 three years ago.  The reverse fixture ended 2-2, but North Macedonia led 2-0 quite late (79th) minute and were much the better team, total attempts 20-9, on target 8-3, ITB 12-7, BC's 2-1 and saves 1-5. I very much doubt that NM will be as free and easy with a lead this time round and Iceland have back to back road games in unusual surroundings, a lengthy time away from home and poor form to overcome, playing a team with the chance to make history.

1.75 units North Macedonia -1.5 ball 2.72 asian line.
