Denmark and their nation were buoyed by the 4-1 win over Russia ahead of which I wrote ........
Group B completes the day's action. Belgium would probably need to lose by 3+ goals to lose out on top spot in the group, which isn't going to happen, so even if they wanted to finish second and I am not saying they do, it will be very difficult. I also think that they , along with everyone else, feels some sympathy for Denmark given the events of the opening day and how well they played against Belgium . Romelu Lukaku, who I really hope plays and that a lesson has been learned by Roberto Martinez about resting too many players, will almost certainly want to give his club teammate Christian Eriksen a boost and the two appear to be very close. Finland probably need a point to progress, but wins for Belgium and Denmark would most likely see the pair finish 1-2 and that would mean everyone apart from Russia and Finland being happy ! Russia would move onto 4 points with a draw, but would be -2 goals still and that will earn second if Belgium win, but might not be enough to secure third if Finland were to get a result and that "draw" came in the earlier game . They might be happy to sit back and wait and see what happens early in Saint Petersburg and that will suit their style, they look limited, one dimensional and very defensive minded in any case, but inviting the Danes on to them too much would be dangerous in Copenhagen . Denmark are the better team and will have "justice" and a passionate home crowd behind them. I spoke about how strong they are at Parken in my pre tournament notes ...........
The Danes are the home team in this group and will play all three games in Copenhagen, where they were unbeaten and scored 13 goals in qualification. They have lost only to Belgium (twice) in 28 starts (almost three years) and results in the last year include four points off England, a draw in Germany this month and 4-0 win in Austria. They have to go well and look the most likely to finish runner up to Belgium.
That 1-2 finish can still happen. Denmark have now lost to just Finland and Belgium in the last three years (30 games), no shame in the latter and they should never have been pressured into restarting that game with Finland.
They showed real quality there and despite the opposition not being up to much, they look a genuine top ten FIFA ranked team, they have depth and great team spirit and seem even closer as a group following the events of the opening game and feel like a squad on a mission.
I am rather sure about where they stand in the EC pecking order, a little less certain about Wales, who played well against a Turkey side, who were a no show at Euro 2020, but comprehensively outplayed by Switzerland and Italy (who rotated heavily) , The Danes fit somewhere between these two and nearer to the Italians, who have been the most impressive side at these Championships through the group stage. XG suggests that the Welsh should have conceded an additional 4.5 goals which, across three games is HUGE, xGD says that Denmark should be three goals better off and they will surely get plenty of chances today and I have to take their class to tell and prevail.
