Dunkerque- Auxerre

This game is interesting and is a fixture we can, hopefully, learn something from for next season.

Auxerre need two wins to secure promotion and they will not want to leave it that long, but their final two games come against a team with nothing to play for and one who will already be relegated by then, so they have that "easy" finish if required.

Dunkerque are four points clear of the drop zone with this game in hand and should be safe, as they have played at a high level since Christmas. They went into the holiday in 19th place, with just 13 points from 19 rounds and have subsequently played at 3rd place level ( 1.75 points pg). I have kind of already bought into what is going on at Dunkerque, which is interestingly located just 10KM from the border of Belgium and wrote in February .......

VAFC must have been disappointed by that and today they have perhaps a final chance to stay in touch with the other bottom four teams in a "six pointer" with Dunkerque who have already lost 8 home games this season. However, the hosts have really picked up since the Christmas break ...........

All those opponents are top 12 and have otherwise been in decent form, St Etienne won 5-0 in their only subsequent start, Paris FC were unbeaten in eight games either side of that defeat, Ajaccio have won twice subsequently and Grenoble are 3rd. The Christmas break was the first one that head coach Luis Castro , who arrived in September after 4 years with the Benfica youth and B teams, had and also the first transfer window. His was quite an ambitious appointment , but I suspect the club have plans to kick on following promotion last season and their budget was fairly decent for this campaign, bigger that 6-7 teams. They have a very wealthy Turkish owner ( also owns Samsunspor) and former player Demba Ba is sporting director and they were busy in January with 7 signings and five of those played in their last league game. They were a mixture of loans from bigger clubs and one or two very experienced additions like Gaetan Courtet from Guingamp, he has over 100 goals at Ligue 2 level and above. There is a very interesting article with Ba on the inews site and it is worth a read when you get time.

I am interested in the project now that it seems like it is up and running and whilst Dunkerque have won just two home games, they were the last two and surely a good chance for the hat-trick.

The people now involved in the club have not come to battle to survive in Ligue 2, but that had to be target #1 and this was their first ever season at this level. It is a league in which you can improve quickly (two of the current top 6 finished 14th and 15th last season) and in 24/25. Ligue 2 will be smaller (18 teams) and arguably, weaker. Long term readers know that we almost always do well with these teams that we pick up on early and track and it can be both fun and profitable to follow their progress and that should be the case with Dunkerque. They are looking to help resurrect the career of Jean-Phillipe Gbamin for whom Everton paid 25m€ for in 2019 after three successful Bundesliga seasons. He was injury hit for most of his time with the Toffees, but apparently he agreed to terminate the final year of his contract and forgo £5m of salary, in order to become a free agent and play regular football. He found a home in Dunkerque and after being given a month to get up to speed, he has played in DM in all 15 games of 2024, through which the club have conceded just 14 goals (0.71 gpg fewer than prior to his arrival). Still only 28 yo and with almost 200 Bundesliga and Ligue 1 starts to his name and a full Ivory Coast international, he brings a lot of class to the team. Back in October, before he joined the club it was noted by the Guardian that..........

Gbamin is reportedly the fittest he has been in years, training at his local side in France and paying a team of nutritionists, trainers and physios €5,000 a month to ensure that when the call comes, he is ready. But which team are willing and able to take the gamble?

That team was Dunkerque and highlights the kind of outside the box thinking and brave decisions the club are prepared to make, but I bet they now wish they had agreed to a longer contract (it expires in the summer). He got a 17th national team call up last month and his career seems on the rise once more and, at least for now, Dunkerque are reaping the benefits.

The hosts and Auxerre have played at pretty much that same 3rd place level since Christmas (Dunkerque marginally better) and the visitors have conceded six goals in their last two away games, with Dunkerque conceding very few, so I feel there has to be some value in the home team at the huge odds quoted. Having said that, the real value is getting a good look at them against a quality opponent with next season in mind.

Good luck!
